How to protect your home while on vacation

Burglars love to shop while you’re on vacation! Every year families become victims of household burglary, often while they’re away on vacation. Here’s what you can do to help make your home less attractive to would-be burglars:

• Have a friend or relative “house sit”.

• Make sure neighbors know you will be away, leave a key and your contact information with a trusted neighbor.

• Lock all doors and windows, secure the garage door.

• Leave a car parked in the driveway or ask a neighbor to park in your driveway.

• Use timers to turn on and off lights at certain times, alternating patterns to create an occupied look.

• Have your newspapers, mail and any packages picked up daily.

• Leave blinds and shades in their normal position. Closed blinds during the day are a sigh of an empty house.

Additional measures you can take to make your home more secure any time of the year:

• Prune hedges and low lying tree limbs to keep windows visible.

• Porches and entrances should be well lit.

• Your street number should be clearly visible for police and firemen.

• Never carry personal information on your key tags.

• Avoid using your name on mailbox.

• Don’t hide keys outside – burglers are familiar with typical hiding places.

• Have locks rekeyed or changed when moving.

• Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.

• Don’t let strangers in your home to use the phone or bathroom.

• Many intruders will avoid a home with a security system, but only if they know there is one. Use plenty of alarm yard signs and window decals.

• Use the “instant” setting on your home security system when everyone is in bed for the night to cancel the alarm delay and provide extra security.
